On the 20th of August, 2023 the Diaspora awards were given to the 2023 winners, We migrants won one of the Prizes.
The Prizes were presented for the first time in Wilhelmshaven although the same idea and prizes are already presented, since 2018 in Bremen. It is primarily aimed at migrant persons and associations and they are awarded in five categories that are based on the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals. The winners each receive prize money of 1,000 euros.
The initiators are Mrs Virginie Kamche a Cameroon born german citizen who is involved more than 30 years with the African Community in Bremen an started the prize there, and Wilma Nyari who has been active in the jury of the Bremen Diaspora Prize for several years. Together and with other people, they founded the “Decolonial Network Northwest” last year, an association of committed people against racism from Bremen, Wilhelmshaven and Oldenburg. The aim of the network is to address the problem of racism in rural areas.
The Decolonial Network succeeded in receiving funding from the Federal Agency for Civic Education last year and this made possible the funding of the prizes. The city of Wilhelmshaven has also helped with funding
The Diaspora Award was presented in Wilhelmshaven at the Pumpwerk cultural center. Before the award ceremony there was a small “marketplace” where there were the stands of the candidates, presenting their work plus bands playing music and all this in a sunny Sunday.
